"cdrom/cdrom1" ??
I was surprised to find two cdroms listed in my Files under "media,"
neither of which work at all.
I was also surprised to see, when searching here, that this issue
has been going on since 2004! How can something like that continue
unresolved in a major distribution for so long?
I have one cdrom which is a dvd player and recorder, too. It is a
dvd/rw which also playes cds. It will not play anything at all in
Mepis, but was doing fine in other distributions.
I see "fstab" editing as a partial solution in some cases. What
should I post here to get help with this? Do you need my fstab
file, for example?
Is there a patch? That would be wonderful.

It may be that in 2004 there was such a problem, but that was probably a one-off thing. I have been using MEPIS for almost three years now and can assure you there never has been a structural problem.
In version 6.5 this issue has suddenly reared its head. Warren is aware of it, and a first fix was tested by a couple of people yesterday, myself included. For most of us it worked well, but there are still some nagging details to be taken care of. I am confident it will be completely fixed within a couple of days. So stick around....

Thank you both Adrian and carlops for such a quick
answer here. That's very nice to know posts are
being read by those in the know!
It is also good to know that the developers are
working on this issue which has "reared its head"
again. I'll be waiting for the patch.

Yup, That's Part of The Problem

Yes Priscilla, your fstab file shows one of the symptoms. Carlops, et. al. are testing patches as we speak, but Warren does not want to release it until he has cleaned it up a bit.
The general reason for the problem is that there was a change in how Mepis, Ubuntu, and other Debian-based distros detect, set up, and mount "removable media".
I cannot give you advice on the CD-ROMs because I do not have dual drives. Perhaps carlops can give some details for a temporary fix. The only thing I can offer at this point is to occasionally go into your /etc/fstab file and delete the extraneous /dev/fd0 lines. This you would have to do as user root.
I know that's not much comfort. Be patient

for now, best solution would be to move the lines that refer to cd drives to the static version of fstab.
Create an extra icon on the desktop that points to cdrom1 instead of cdrom.
IF your hardware supports it, right click desktop > configure > behaviour > device icons and mark mounted and unmounted cds and dvds. Again, if the hardware supports auto detection, this is the best way to go for now. So just try that.
My guess is the fix will be here tomorrow, but don't shoot me if it isn't....
Cheers

I don't have dual drives, either.
Anyway, I just went in and deleted the two extra floppy
entry lines and the extra cdrom line.
I rebooted and everything works fine now.
Too simple. My machine is probably going to catch fire
now or something.
edit: oh, I see.
After a while it won't work.. plus
the rogue lines reappear in /etc/fstab.
How 'bout that.

Updated Mepis packages (mepis-auto-6.0 and mepis-init-6.0 both ver. 6.5) were released for both 32bit and 64bit.
I put up some additional info here:

Warren is working on a patch.
Till then you can post here your /etc/fstab and we'll see if there's something that can be fixed.
