No sound

It seems Linux hates my computer because sound refuses to work. I had a little bit of luck in Ubuntu. I had no sound in the beginning but after I changed the sound settings from autodetect to NVidia nForce2 - IEC958 the sound worked for music files, but not for video files or web browsers. I thought it might have been a codec issue, but I have a laptop on which I installed the exact same packages and the sound worked perfectly for all files. I tried asking for help on the Ubuntu forums but was ignored. So I thought I'd try my luck with a different distro and here I am. I have no sound under Mepis and fiddling around with the sound settings didn't seem to do anything. Do any of you have any ideas as to what the issue might be and how I could fix it? Or maybe if the issue is with my onboard soundcard could any of you recommend a cheap soundcard that is knows to work under Linux?

Welcome to Mepis
I think sound blaster 5.1 works well but you need to search -- if you click on Community up above you can check the wiki -- there are also lots of posts at http://www.mepislovers.com
There was a sound guide someplace on Mepislovers -- can't find right now -- here's one old article http://www.linux.com/howtos/Linux-Gamers-HOWTO/x696.shtml
Our sound guru is user mos on mepislovers
