i have a dell inspiron 5150 laptop.
It's keyboard has a special Func. key that controls the volume and the brightness. these by default are not picked up by Mepis..
i needed to enable them and moreover wanted to use that func (fn) key with other keys to make them short cuts for opening new applications and so forth...
plz help.. i dont know how to make mepis recognize the Fn key.
Hope some of this helps you

There are programs you can install in Synaptic called hotkeys, hotkey-setup, keymapper, xmodmap, xev ... there is i8kutils which may include other things. You can also look at the KDE menu --
KDE Control Center ==>> Regional & Accessibility ==>> Keyboard Layout ==>> Tick box for Enable keyboard layouts ==>> select Laptop Notebook Dell Inspiron 6xxx/8xxx
Here it is (in German) http://www.linux-web.de/thread.php?threadid=9144

Personally I would get the ones working that are easy -- all the keys don't need to work. Make sure your fan runs enough -- you want i8kutils set up for that. I have HP laptop and the KDE control panel fixed the volume and some other keys -- I left it at that. 5150 is older so be careful of overheating and battery life -- I do use a cooling fan pad that fits under my laptop -- these are often cheap. Anything that gets the laptop off the surface will help, as vents are usually on the bottom as well as the sides.
