old mepis fine on new HP LCD but with 6.5 and knoppix 5.1.1 not good

Mepis 6.5 and knoppix 5.1.1 dont give good video on my hp f1905 lcd screen. But an older version of mepis does just fine. I have an emachines 2.5 celeron 256 meg 3d intel extreme graphics AGP. XP is current OS but want to install the latest version of mepis. Is this just a x problem or screen res problem. Sorry don't know the old mepis version number.

Damn small 3.3 seems to work fine

DSL 3.3 seems to work fine.

I guess it might be a good idea to give you an idea of what I want to do. A long time a ago I burned A mepis iso file. To give you an idea of how old it is it runs Open Office 1.1. It works great but I want to try Out latest and greatest 6.5 and I also want to get Knoppix 5.1.1 to work. The old mepis which I love to use the internet with is way faster than ie and the games are better too. I bought suse 10.2 and a few games from tux games. What I plan to do is get comfortable using 6.5 and knoppix. Then make a good install with mepis and give it 10 Gigs. Then having a solid working OS I will have an Idea of what to do if suse gives me problems once its installed.

The problem seems to be the screen. Sometimes part of the picture is off the screen, sometimes the screen overlaps sometimes the screen is in four corners and there is a black
cross in the the middle. If I had some way to drag it into
place it would be fine. Every thing in the old mepis works except tuxracer which seems to have the screen out of sinc
problem like 6.5 and knoppix 5.1.1. I have a huge hunch that
all this can get solved with some X configuration. The trouble is I don't know X very well.

Did you try F3 at the boot prompt?

Did you try pressing F3 at the boot prompt from a Live CD and select the correct monitor resolution?

It's a hidden function key that pulls up a list of resolutions you can choose from. If it works, just use the reinstall X feature (under the repair tab in the MEPIS X-Windows Assistant).

If the resolution is already correct, the problem is probably your sync frequencies.

Use the MEPIS X-Windows Assistant (you'll find it under the icon in the tray that looks like a monitor and screwdriver).

See if your monitor is in the list (or another monitor with the same specs). If it's not in the list, you can enter the resolutions manually. Set it correctly and then reinstall X (the repair tab in the X-Windows Assistant is used for that purpose).

How do I restart X

I found the X config page for the monitor. The f1905 is not there. I tried to change the frequencies but it doesn't change
anything so I tried to restart X. I pressed Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
and I was at the login screen and pressed Ctrl-Alt-Backspace agian and total blank screen. I know that doing this stuff is harder from a live CD but I do not want to install over XP unless I know that I know what I am doing.

Thank you for your help it did help some.

Take good notice of what Jim wrote earlier...

You don't have to install Mepis at this point..
Just boot the livecd and press F3 when the bootmenu selection pops up. Select the monitor resolution that your lcd-screen normally works with and press enter.
