I HAve an intel Pentium 3 motherboard, what I need to know is:

Do Mepis Run on such Crap? Shocked
Well. Right Now I run Madrake 10.1 right now, but with some crashes. But I can Run XP perfectly. I don't want to be a MS User.
So, Mepis can run on this? I mean MEPIS is more Stable than Mandrake?

CPU features:
Jawdropping!

Motherboard: Chinese Gruyer Cheese [dun't found the brand nor the model]
Processor: P3/1GHz/133MHz/256KB Cache
RAM: 384 MB
HD: 40 GB Western Digital
Video: PCI Integrated SIS610 w/16MB Share Memory
Sound: PCI CMI-8330 Integrated

Frankly this is a Frankenstein PC. Laughing out loud

Well...

I'm using an Aopen board w/ a PIII (933Mhz), 512 MBs of RAM. The drive is a 40 Gig 7200 RPM Seagate.

I run the tower in a cabinet where no one can see it Eye-wink

The only thing that I paid good money for is the 1440X900 LCD screen and maybe the memory. Ive had folks glance at SM 6.5 running and ask me if I had a MAC.

I don't know about your specific Sound and Video but I haven't had any problem w/ PIII era computers w/ 256 MB of RAM or better.

Can't do 3D video yet, lookin' for a decent card...

Will run Mepis very well

I have 450 MHz P3 -- runs Mepis well. The main thing is the Ram -- and 384 is plenty (I have only 320)

Sis video can be a problem, use boot cheat code xdrvr=sis

add
xdrvr=sis
at end of GRUB boot line -- cursor will be there -- after install you can edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add it.

Your Comments are neat

Thanks For the Info...

I am Having no probs with video only a little lag @ reproducing DVDs...

I am going to use that "cheat code" , but what's it for?

P3 is no old only a little dusty, cof, cof

The cheat code makes sure

The cheat code makes sure the Sis driver is loaded for your Sis video card

Make sure you have a swap partition -- should be about 800 MB

And If The Codes Work

Once you have determined which codes work for your system, and you decide to install Mepis (hint, hint), then you can make those codes permanent by entering them into the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.

Don't worry about that now. First, test your system and make sure it works. Then, if you need help with post-install fixes, drop us another line Smiling

PII Mobile with 256MB of RAM

My wife has a 300mhz PII Mobile based laptop with 256MB of RAM running SimplyMEPIS 6.0-4 Beta 4 with no issues (everything she uses works fine).

It's not a speed demon. But, considering the age of the laptop (and it's got a small, slow drive in it), it's usable for what she needs. I've also installed lots of extras on it (codecs, additional software)

I installed SimplyMEPIS 6.0 Final on a friend's PC that's got a 500mhz PIII with 192MB of RAM, and it's running fine (faster than my wife's laptop, despite less RAM).

I had previously installed one of the 6.0-4 betas on it, too (but, I ended up going back to 6.0 Final on this PC).

I have not tested 6.5 Final on these PCs (and probably won't). As the old saying goes... "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". These users don't need the latest stuff.

I have a pentium 111 with

I have a pentium 111 with SIS Video and it had no problems and l didn't do a thing to get it to work ... it just worked. My RAM is 192 and the processor is 450. Everything worked right out of the box. I installed Mepis 6.5.00 and let it boot up the newest kernel.

Thanks for all the

Thanks for all the encouraging for migrating to MEPIS. Like you said MEPIS run Smoothly, so smooth that I no longer was able to wait and installed right away... Barf! but it has a problem after installing it. until i realize that the GRUB goes on th MBR and not on root.

After installing MEPIS the bootloader failed to initialize and an error appeared: Something like L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 ...
I was like Jawdropping! WT? But I have fixed it. Installing the botloader into MBR... What is MBR? What is GRUB?

Is like when I was introduce to my first computer: What is a 5 1/4?
Discovered that 5 1/4 was the size in inches (on my country we use centimeters). But it was on 1995!!!!

So that's why I write very rare language english style.

Thanks a lot...

MBR is the Master Boot

MBR is the Master Boot Record - 512 bytes at the beginning of your Hard Drive that gets loaded first when booting.

Grub stands for GRand Unified Bootloader.

Having Grub on root is useful if you are using another bootloader. with Grub on root you can use Windows bootlader to load Mepis for example. But usually Grub on MBR is easier.
