Sorry to be a Jobs comforter but...

Kodak cameras are known for not conforming to the normal standards for usb connectivity. I do not know how old your camera is, but I have been working with computers for a long time now and there was oly one brand mof camera that consistently gave troubles with usb ports, and that's kodak.

1) There may be some relief yet. Have you tried turning off Beryl and using the standard kde desktop to access your camera?

2) When your camera is connected, can you access it through the konqueror file manager services tab? If you don't know what that is, look for the yellow star icon on the left side of the page margin and click it. Expand the Storage Media tree and look for your camera.

Failing that, vote with your wallet and tell kodak why. That's what I did and I will not stock any kodak products unless they standardize their usb connectivity across the board.

Ouch, as a retired Kodak

Ouch, as a retired Kodak employee. My Kodak DC4690 has worked fine with previous Mepis releases. I have not tried it with 6.5 as I am not into photography at the moment. An option is to use an sd or compact flash card and pop it into a USB adapter, accessing it as a drive through Konqueror.

Strange, should be fine

From the gphoto database:
http://www.gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php
the z650 is listed as being supported.

Thanks all for advice. Not

Thanks all for advice. Not sure what problem is. At the moment i needed to install next distro and move on. I will re-install and test again in a couple weeks. My experience with Mepis has been a positive one again, and look forward to re-testing it in the near future. Again THANKS ALL....Northernfrog....

Update,still not working

Update, still not working . My conclusion is that any Ubuntu based distro will not work . I can say this as i have tried most Ubuntu based distro's with the same results . I say it's Ubuntu related because Mandriva based Distro's work like a charm . So i can't blame Mepis for the problem . I am a little let down as to the answers returned to my post . I felt instead of looking for solution to the problem , i was advised that it should work , and or , that just sometimes somethings don't work in Linux .
My Linux origins began with Mepis , and as a user/tester for the past 4 years , Mepis has always been in the top runners . I hope Mepis continues with it's outstanding work and contribution to the LinuxWorld , but must not forget that 1 user equals 100's . Leading one to believe those conclusions would be wrong , as what is an Ubuntu problem , is not a Linux problem . Anyways thank you Mepis for your terrific Linux Distro ...... Signed: Northernfrog

How do you want it to work?

I just noticed this thread.

How to you want it to work?

It shows icon on desktop, and shows folder.

That means it's probably seeing your camera OK as a USB attached storage device. So, all you'd really need to do is open that folder with Konquerer (click on it), drill down to the folder that has the images (just like you would with any other folder), choose "Edit>Selection>Select All" to mark all of the images, then "Edit>Copy" to copy them.

Then, click on a different folder and select "Edit>Paste" to copy them from your camera to a new folder.

That's the way I handle it with Windows with card readers, etc., too.

Clarify what you mean by "try to open using digiKam".

If you open DigiKam, go to an existing album (or create a new one), you can import images from anywhere you have access to.

Since your Kodak probably shows up just like any other drive in your system, try using the "Import Folder" feature in Digikam.

Then, look under "Storage Media" when the next screen pops up, select the icon for the drive associated with your camera (the size should match the size of the memory card in your camera), select the folder the images are in, and it should copy them to the current digiKam folder. Or, use the import images feature instead and select the desired images from the camera.

I think digiKam also has the ability to do it differently.

But, I've used and owned a lot of digital cameras over the years, and I can't remember the last time I even plugged in a camera directly to my PC. I use a card reader instead and your Kodak looks like it would work as one, if you're getting an icon on the desktop for it when it's plugged in (that means it's USB Mass Storage Compliant). So, just treat it just like any other drive in your system for importing images, etc.

Shorter Answer

Look under "Storage Media" when using Applications (digiKam, Konqueror, etc.), and your Kodak is probably showing up there, just like any other disk drive in your system.

So, if you use features like file open, import images/folders, etc., click on the Storage Media option that pops up, select the media size that corresponds to your camera's memory card, drill down to the desired folder and you can grab what you want from the camera. Treat it just like any other disk drive attached to your system.

So...you aren't serious about living and working with the distro?

In view of the foregoing, I am just a bit mystified as to why you feel let down.

That, unfortunately, is still a reality of life with Linux, and it is rarely the fault of any specific distro, or even a large cross section of the distros out there. The fault rests squarely with egotistic manufacturers who insist on behaving like they are the only game going in their segment, instead of adhering to standards (the standards situation has severely declined since the early 90s).

I hate to break it to you, but, I know plenty of users who have problems with Kodak EasyShare digitals on windoze. I steer them toward Olympus or Canon as a better choice. I have yet to hear anyone complain that I advised them incorrectly.

Mike's answer was a very pragmatic response, and there is a LOT of garbage hardware out there. Canon and Lexmark printers come to mind automatically.

I don't care if you use Linux, windoze or any other OS/pesudo-OS; my recommendation has always been the same as what Rich has mentioned: Buy your camera, a few spare cards and a good card reader, and dump your photos onto your computer via USB mass storage.

Sorry...ignoring the fact that you're 5-down on the hypothetical, consumer egotism is hardly a valid premis for these kinds of arguments.

1 user absolutely equals 1 user. Nothing more. Nothing less.

It is also an absolute that, if you buy good hardware, you will tend to have fewer problems, no matter what OS you're running.

There are plenty of users out here who will give you good recommendations as to good hardware to purchase...and they count for how many hundreds in the 'new math' of consumer opinion?

Google searches and soliciting the advice of a professional also couldn't hurt.

Now,now. Not sure if your

Now,now. Not sure if your the moderater or not, but that is a poor answer after stating i've been a user for 4 years. Failure to recognize a problem exists in the first place may be difficult to except, but to continue treating a user as they are the problem becomes annoying. I do understand many new user's need help in the use of linux, but an experienced user asking for help, and bringing forth a BUG, should be assisted in finding, and resolving the issue. If at worst sent to another linux distro as some users may view this as being redirected back to winblows, as the only solution for there camera's. This would be shameful for new users to think that they need Winblows to run there camera, and or worse if they own one of these camera's they need to either re-install winblows, or may discourage them from installing a linux distro in the first place. Any how, because i use my Camera on a regular basis, and the lack of true help in this forum,i've been forced to use another distro . I am waiting for the next release hoping my problem (bug) is corrected.....THANKS Northernfrog

Do The Math

Let's see northernfrog. Do the math. There have been, as of this point, a total of ten posts on this thread. Two of them by moderators (yes, EnigmaOne is one of the moderators). Of those ten, six of them have been responses to you in an attempt to help you with your problem. Sorry that we have not been able to help you, but a number of the guys have been trying to be realistic, and pragmatic. And, unfortunately, some problems cannot be solved. Is that a bug? In the most general sense, yes. But as EnigmaOne pointed out the Linux guys are working with two hands tied behind their backs.

I also hate to break the news to you: No Operating System Is Perfect. Not Windows, not FreeBSD, not Linux, not the Mepis distribution of Linux. But the only thing that irritates me is when a person who asks for help on a forum, and gets help, but does not get the answers they want, confuses that lack of a desired answer with "lack of true help". You're getting help here guy. You just don't like the answers. Sorry that's the case, and I really hope that you can find a Linux distro that will work with your other hardware. If it doesn't, well, you can still use Windows.

Cheers.

Jon

The ability to comfortably use a computer is directly proportional to desire to listen, learn, and experiment, and is inversely proportional to the fear, anger, and stubbornness that you show.
