External DVD rom Will not burn DVD's over 1x speed

Hi, I have an Hp ze4420us running mepis 6.5, an external usb dvd burner connected to it. I have been having problems getting the burner to burn a dvd over 1x speed. I am using k3b updated to the latest version. I can get a cd to burn faster than that but not a dvd. I have been to several forums and saw a few others with this same problem, but have not seen any solution. This has been my only problem so far and am loving my mepis way of life but this has stumped me. I would appreciate any help or suggestions with this. Thank You! palinuxuser

Optical drive speeds are not equal

I have this impression you do not have the correct understanding of burning speeds and the differences between cd's and dvd's.

Writing a dvd at 1x speed is about the same as writing to a cd at 7.2x speed. The original cd had 650Mb, the original dvd had 4.7gb, the math is easy. If it takes 60 minutes to read a cd at 1 x, then to do the same for the dvd would require 7.2 times the volume of data to be read with the 60 minute period.

The following website will give you some excellent information, but in short, a dvd writer on a usb port 2.0 will never reach any decent speeds.
