My experience of upgrading to 6.5.

1. there is no auto upgrade tool. When I did update via synaptic it was not getting updated to 6.5. I checked the forums and changed the apt-sources list.
Auto-upgradation should be there.
2. When i upgraded after a series of updates during which there were numerous dpkg errors. Finally got through it and rebooted.
3. After reboot there was black screen!!. Kernel panic unable to mount the root. Checked the forums again some how some wrong kernel was installed. I booted with 6.0 live cd and copied the contents of the /boot from live cd except the grub folder as suggested by one author.
4 rebooted , no black screen. thanks I was able to start.
5. the bootsplash is not at all appealing.
6. Changed to default kernel-desktop and rebooted.
7. After kernel change now there is no sound.
8. My logitech webcam not detected default. Works default in ubuntu.
9. My palm is not syncing. Syncs well in ubuntu by default.
10. Beryl not working. Works default in ubuntu.

I dont think 6.5 is any good than prior releases.

No,no,no........

Hi,

Don't upgrade from 6.0 into the 6.5 release. It won't work if you do that NOW. However: I updated (incrementally, over months, not all at once) from 6.0 through all the betas/rcs right into 6.5 WITHOUT any problem whatsoever.

1. I don't need auto-upgrade. I never use it anyway. You changed sources.list and complain (4) that the wrong kernel was installed? That is probably an Ubuntu kernel, not a Mepis kernel. You made a boo-boo somewhere.

2. Numerous dpkg-errors? None of them were apparently serious enough to keep you from rebooting? That's strange.....

3. Oops, you DID make the kernel mistake

4. Basically you just copied back the original 6.0 kernel to fix your own mistake.

5. That's your perception. I don't agree with you.

6/7. Apparently (although you don't mention it) you did manage to install the 6.5 Mepis kernel before you rebooted

7/8/9. Did you ask help on those issues to find out why?
Why not?

10. Which Ubuntu are you referring to with Beryl installed by default? As far as I know 6.06 and 7.04 don't have it. Did you start 'KDE 3D' at login for beryl to start?

I think that Mepis 6.5 is real good. Your experiences may have been different, but you did not really use 6.5.
Get the 6.5 .iso. burn it and install it. You may feel very different about 6.5.
