Startup problem

Hi, I have loaded Mepis on a separate drive and it worked well for a couple of times, then, it started bringing up the message "Failed to allocate mem resource #6: 10000@Fe000000 for 0000:0:00.0
"Timeout waiting for DMA.
"drive not ready for command.

The last 2 lines would come up 3 times over a long wait, then it would start okay. I gave it away for a few months because the wait was frustrating, but I really would like to get to be a Linux user, so can anybody help please?

Thanks
bkTerry

Boot the machine, and in the

Boot the machine, and in the grub screen (the screen where you make the choice which OS to start), type ide=nodma. This will be added to the grub boot line, visible in the lower part of the screen.

If it boots OK, you can make this change permanent as follows:
- when logged in, press Alt-F2.
- type: kdesu kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst
- find the line that starts with 'kernel' and add ide=nodma
- save the file

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

ide-nodma

Thanks Mr Moderator. Its comforting that there is someone out there that knows these things. But. That sorted out the startup part, but once logged in the kdesu etc brought up the message "Could not run specified command". I tried it with different spaces etc but to no avail. What did happen though, was that I could not connect with this thread via the link on the email you sent me as this brought up the scary Konqueror crashed box. While trying to get back to this site to beg for more help I came across: Could not load KDEINIT; KDE session manager crashed & caused signal 11; KDE daemon (or is it demon) crashed etc; KONQUEROR crashed etc, and none of these could be 'backtraced' as "debugger 'gdb'" not found.
One thing would be very helpful is a hot key to close down, as all of the above meant I had to switch off the computer and start again, which probably is not good. The only way to get back to here was to let the startup go through the slow version so the link on your email would work.
More advice welcome.

Thanks

Question

bkterry, I have a question for you. since I'm wondering if you understood what carlops instructed you to do. When carlops gave you the commands to enter above, he meant for you to do this on an INSTALLED SYSTEM. So, have you installed Mepis onto the drive? That's the first question.

The next question is this. Before you tried to type in the command line beginning with "kdesu..." did you first press the atl-f2 keys?: If you did, then you should have been greeted by a "Run" dialog box where you could then enter "kdesu kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst" (without the quotation marks. Linux commands are CaSe SenSiTive, so the command above is all in lowercase letters. However, spacing is not that important. In the command above there are single spaces between each command so it is:

kdesu(space)kwrite(space)/boot/grub/menu.lst

Oh, and in menu.lst, the last three characters are lowercase "L" "S" "T".

Is that what you were typing?

If I have misunerstood what happened please disregard what I have written.

Jon
