OS slows to a crawl down after several weeks of uptime, with no apps running

After several weeks of uptime, Mepis 6 slowed down veery-veery slow --
windows switch takes several seconds, with repainting visible at slow speed.
I had same slowdown in home PC after 47 days of uptime (2GB RAM),
and on work PC (1GB RAM) after 26 days of uptime.
The slowdoown remains after I killed firefox and
everything except konsole. In top->M, I did not have large apps, but half
of swap was shown taken, whcih was suprising, because only konsole was running.
On both computers, I run only firefox, konsole and xchat.
What can this problem be attributed to ?
Thanks
Yakov
ksensors is a good dashboard

I keep ksensors open in the corner of my display with memory, cpu state, swap, uptime and cpu displayed, I remember one time my system slowed down to a virtual halt and ksensors showed memory and swap pegged out, so I knew where my problem lay, I just had to go in and find the offender using top. Sometimes you can deal with these things a little faster if you can telnet in from another computer since the slow down may affect the graphical display more that a terminal connection.
It looks like a runaway

It looks like a runaway program that eats your memory, check in top press ">" to order by memory utilization and see which program eats your memory.
