SimplyMEPIS 6.5.02 Update Fixes Vista Detection, MTP device support, etc

Morgantown, WV, Apl 28, 2007 -- SimplyMEPIS 6.5.02 is a minor update to the 6.5 release. The update adds Vista detection, newer alsa sound utilities, better handling of CDROM devices, etc. The updated ISOs are available at MEPIS online mirrors. Individual updated packages are available at the MEPIS 32 and 64 bit package pools.

The .02 release ISOs include the follow recent updates: alsa-lib, alsa-oss and alsa-utils updated to better match the 1.0.14 alsa sound kernel drivers; MEPIS Installer and MEPIS System Assistant updated to detect and add boot entries for Vista and third party Linux installations; mepis-init and mepis-auto updated to improve configuration of CDROM drives; Amarok updated to improve MTP support; Synaptic updated to 0.57.11.1; and new Getting Started documentation linked from the CD user desktop.

Also recently updated in response to user requests, but not pre-installed on CD: audacity 1.3.2 sound editor and dmraid 1.0.0.rc13 win-raid support.

Warren Woodford of MEPIS explains how MEPIS distributes minor updates: "We update 32 and 64 bit versions at the same time, to keep them in sync. As updates become available, we release the packages into the MEPIS repositories. Our users can update at any time with the Synaptic software manager or an alternate package manager of their choice. In this case, some of the updates affect booting from CD or installing on hard drive, so it is important to also release new ISO files."

"For MEPIS testers and subscribers, we now offer rapid early access to updated ISOs via 'delta' files. For example, by downloading a 15MB delta file and already having the original 6.5 ISO, our testers were able to produce a .02 ISO in maybe 10 minutes. This was suggested by one of our testers, AdrianTM, and it really speeds up our final testing cycle."

"On another note, we have added Getting Started documentation on CD. The docs are provided to help new users get up and running with MEPIS, especially if they temporarily don't have Internet access. Of course, if they are online they can find documentation and people eager to help at the MEPIS Community site and the various MEPIS forum sites. The docs were written and edited by a team led by one of our Wiki administrators, Jerry Bond."

32 and 64 bit ISO images are available in the 'released' subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and at the MEPIS public mirrors. For immediate access to new releases, and to support the development of MEPIS, why not go to the MEPIS store and become a MEPIS subscriber? CDs, DVDs, t-shirts, sport shirts, and MEPIS penguins are also available at www.mepis.org/store
