WPA encryption problem

Hi all
I've just gone over to wireless networking and was happy to find that the kit I am using worked straight off. I am able to connect either unencrypted or using WEP but have been unable to connect using WPA.
My router is a XyXEL prestige 600HW and the card is a Peak II pci card, the lspci line for this reads:
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)
This is all running under mepis 6.5.02
I've tried a number of things listed in the forum but everything has failed so far.

Tried all that before I posted the first message.

Something that may be relevant.
On the wireless page of 'Mepis Network Assistant' when I add a key to the WEP section, it remains after I have exited and reopened the app, if I enter a key in the WPA section it vanishes if I go to another tab and return. Does this imply that there is a problem with network assistant and the key is not being saved ?
Can I place the key manually and if so where ?

try going the knetworkmanager way.
Set mepis assistant to auto, reboot, fire up knetworkmanager from internet connection menu and connect.

I don't see how that helps me sort out a WPA key ?

Knetworkmanager allows you to enter a WPA code:
http://en.opensuse.org/Projects/KNetworkManager#Wireless_LAN
That app does not work with all chipsets, however, so you might need to try another one (e.g., Wlassistant or Wifi-Radar).
BTW: are you clicking on Apply after entering the code in Network Assistant? If not, it will disappear when you switch tabs.
Did you do the basics?

You comment that you have tried things from the forums, but did you go through the Wiki section:
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/WPA
That was put together with Warren's input, so I recommend you go through that step-by-step if you have not already.
Then get back to us and tell us what happened. Good luck.
