ATI Radeon 1650x cant get it to work

Ive been trying everything I can think of to get the drivers working, but everytime I get black screen and text login and have go back to vesa. Has anyone been able to get fglrx working? really appreciate some help on this ive wasted like 3 days trying to get this working. This first time ive had a big problem with mepis.

ATI fglrx driver will not work with AIGLX/Beryl
Use instructions here to install ATI fglrx driver:

Download the fglrx driver from ati and install it with the module-assistant method (ubuntu/dapper)

is the site to download a driver (try this one first -- you may have more success with this one than the newest drivers)
Note that Mepis does not use sudo
