Can't startup filesystem Halting
Posts: 1
When attempting to boot the LiveCD (on my Dell Latitude C__) it fails and says
Can't startup filesystem
Halting
This is not a bad CD and it works on my desktop.
After digging around awhile I found??a??work around here:
http://www.mepis.org/node/view/1048
boot with: linux ide=nodma
I created this new topic for a couple of reasons, one is to make it easier for someone to find the work around by using the exact text of the error message.?? The other more important one is that??I consider this a flaw in the hardware detection or boot process that needs to be fixed and I was concerned that it was being dismissed.?? Other LiveCDs, namely Knoppix and SuSE do not have this problem.?? Actually, I thought MEPIS was based in part on Knoppix, so I was real surprised it didn't work.
thanks,
Steve

Hi,
I also have a sony vaio and am having the same problem. I boot from the CD (a PCMCIA cdrom drive) and at some point the boot stops with an error "can't startup filesystem".
I used the same CD on a regular PC and was able to install with no problem.
I have also been able to install other distro's like Ubuntu, Xandros, Mandrake 10, Fedora 4 on the machine with no problems.
Anyways, I have been goolging for a solution and have not seen any definative fix. If you found one can you let me know?
Thanks

At the bottom of the boot screen, a line will appear that looks something like this:
kernel (hd0,2)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10 root=/dev/hda3 nomce quiet splash=verbose vga=791
Cursor should be at the end of this line. Add an option there. There are many options to try, such as
acpi=off
pci=noirq
hdb=ide-scsi
rootdelay=10
ide=nodma
Guess which to use. Some are documented here (out of date)

Anyone fix this, yet?

Has anyone fixed the non-bootable / unreadble drive issue for install?
I, too, am trying to get Mepis on my Vaio (PCG-505TR). I'm using a USB CD drive, rather than the Sony OEM drive. Therefore, I can't boot from CD. There appears to be no setting in the Phoenix Bios for booting from USB.
I've tried starting the install with the Mepis floppy set, but I get the same, "can't start filesystem. halting" error (or something like that).
I have some usbaspi drivers for recognizing the drive from a DOS boot, but this is my first foray into linux, so I haven't a clue how to even begin recognizing the drive from the Mepis installation boot disk command line.
The switches suggested here ide=nodma, etc. Don't seem to work.
Any suggestions appreciated. I am completely new to linux, so go easy, please. I'm just looking for a way to breath new life in an old 300MHz laptop on its way to the trash bin.
Thanks in advance.

On a Dell d-410 with a "d-bay" usb cd rom drive I was able to boot the live cd using rootdelay=10 AND ide=nodma
Same problem

I 'solved' this problem by burning a new .iso using Alex Feinman's ISORecorder.
Could you elaborate?

SentientCoder,
Could you elaborate on how you created the "new ISO"? (ie: with what files, etc.?)
TIA!
FYI:
System = Acer TravelMate C100 using external USB CD
Unit also has a Firewire drive, but it's not able to boot off it at all - VERY limited BIOS.

Using the torrent to download the iso instead of the ftp sites worked for me.

I have the same problem with my Sony Vaio, but the link above leads to a blank page. I hope somebody reads this and lets me know how to get to the work around.
In the alternative, I am going to write down "boot with: linux ide=nodma" and try that when I get home. I am not sure how to change the settings in the LiveCD, other then to pick from the alternative kernel choices.
