reasonably recent driver

I use Linux on a machine that is primarily for working with photographs. I own an Epson R2400 which is only marginally supported by the ancient release candidate driver included with Mepis 6.0 and 6.5. The 5.0 RC 2 driver is at least a year old and does not support all of the features of what was then a new printer. Much of what it does support is mishandled.
The most current version is vastly superior, supporting every function of the printer and producing far superior results from every photo.
Unfortunately, I do not have the skills to install the CUPS drivers from source. The usual configure/make/make install trio of commands results in a working GIMP, but no ability to print from any other program. I am at a loss to fix the mess.
I really need a modern CUPS driver as part of the package. For me this is not a "nice if", this is a killer. It will force me to another distro and I will take my subscription and several other machines.
Sorry, but the best support

Sorry, but the best support I've been able to find for that printer can be found here: http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Epson-Stylus_Photo_R2400
and that has little to do with MEPIS or any other distro for that matter.
If printing on Linux is *that* drop-dead an issue for you, I suggest that you purchase an HP instead. An added benefit is that the jets/nozzles are a part of the HP cartridges, and are replaced with every re-inking. This is not the case with Epsons. IMHO, Epsons simply clog too much to be reliable over the long-haul, and are a pain to clean.
Kind-of sad, because they do produce a very nice output.
