Mixer selecting wrong sound device

Hello all
I am experiencing problems with the sound card on my computer. (AMD Athlon, Soundblaster Audigy Platinum card, Mepis 6.5). When I turn on the computer there is no sound and I have to manually select the Soundblaster card from the mixer menu. Then when I restart the machine the sound is working fine. I'm sure I just need to select and save the settings, probably, does anyone know where and how I would do this?

UPDATE: After trawling through the sound forums I found a post that mentioned selecting ALSA in the KControl menu so I've done that which hopefully will do the trick.
I'd like to say that I'm really enjoying getting to grips with Mepis and thanks to all who have put it together, these forums are brilliant and it's nice to be free from Windows. Up the revolution! A donation is on the way.

So still, when I restart the computer, the mixer is selecting the wrong sound device. Anyone know why this might be, please?
