Can't add printer: authentication required

I have a Brother HL-2040 printer. I've downloaded and installed the .deb packages for the driver and the CUPS wrapper, and then gone through the process of adding a new printer via HPLIP and the CUPS web interface. All seemed to go well until the end, when it prompts me to "Enter username and password for CUPS at http://localhost:631". Neither root's username/password nor my own works here. Puzzled

Use the KDE Printer Wizard

With newer versions of SimplyMEPIS (6.0, 6.5) you'll want to use the KDE menus for adding a new printer (not the CUPS Web Interface).

Go to KDE Control Center>Peripherals>Printers and add it there using the button you'll see for Administrator mode first.

Cool, that works! So why is

Cool, that works! So why is the hard/wrong/broken way still part of the install?

Nothing to see here. Move along.

I don't have a clue

Great, I'm glad that worked for you.

But, I don't know much about Linux. So, I don't have a clue why it doesn't work the old way using the CUPS Web Interface. See this older thread I started on this issue:

So, I just chock it up as being a "quirk" and live with it. lol
