Mozilla will not access web sites

Hi,
I'm on day 1 with Mepis.
It's a standalone OS on a Dell E1501 laptop with Intel Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, and ATI X1400 video card.

I've got a Broadcomm internal ethernet card. My cable internet is plugged into the ethernet port on my lap top and the little lights blink back there. (My wireless connection DOES work, and Mozilla gets to websites when I used the wireless last night- I accesed one of the unsecure networks in the neighborhood, so the speed was very slow.)

With my cable interent wire plugged in, I am receiving data into the computer, upon boot up, or when plugging the ethernet cable into the laptop- Mepis finds it, and tells me I have a connection. I can see network activity when I click on the icon in the system tray. It IS receiving and transmitting data.

So when I bring up Mozilla, I cannot access websites.
I've tried so many settings and nothing has worked.
Right now the browser settings are set to auto detect a connection.

Should I reload the driver for my broadcom card?
Is there something I should look at under hardware configuration??? Where the heck is that?
Been looking all over.

I'm so frustrated at the moment. I'm fairly seasoned at XP systems, and pretty sharp at getting things to run.

OKay, I have updates, I'm

OKay,

I have updates,
I'm using a Broadcomm ethernet card (BCM4401-B0).

When I plug my cable internet cable into the ehternet port, Mepis succesfully IDs a ethernet connection. The little gears spin on the system tray and then a little computer icon pops up. Then my ethernet icon in the system tray shows conneted. If I plot traffic (eth0 traffic), data is clearly coming in,as well as when I mouse over to the little computer connection icon. Bytes are sending and receiving.

When I open up Mozilla, I get the page "server not found".

Mozilla preferences are: Direct connection to internet.
(I've also tried to set to Auto-detect, reboot, and the same thing.) On my PC (XP PRO) my browser setting is also set to "direct connection". My ISP (Charter) does not make me use IP settings, just plug the cable in the PC.

Any tips?? Do I need to uninstall the PCI cards, then reboot, or reload them?? How would I do that?

what happens when you open a

what happens when you open a konsole and do 'host www.mepis.org' Does it give results?

Then, do 'tracepath www.mepis.org'. Can you confirm that the first node is the wired card? Or does it get out over wireless?

It sounds like two connections are active at the same time, so maybe yoy should disable wireless to force traffic through the wired card

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

tracepath says command not

tracepath says command not found (yeah, so I was curious Eye-wink ).

Should that be traceroute?

It USED to be traceroute,

It USED to be traceroute, but it changed in 6.5. Are you still on 6.0?

Of course I am. I guess you

Of course I am. I guess you missed the whole "why I am not switching to 6.5" dealie of mine because of the Hz issues Smiling
