I have the driver for this that i got off of the Nvidia Web site, but when i type the command to run it...it runs and goes through the nvidia jazz, then gets to a point and says it cant install because something about the kernel not being built or something.
is it not just as easy as typing in the correct command and running it?
i just cant play 3d games properly or run 3-d screen savers properly because of this and i wanted to get the correct driver installed instead of the one linux mepis gave it.

The opt-in Nvidia driver you see at the LiveCD boot is for Nvidia cards a bit newer than yours, but Mepis 6.5 has the correct driver for your card as well.
Go into the Mepis X-Windows Assistant (Located in the application menus at System -> Mepis -> Mepis X-Windows Assistant) and select the Nvidia-Legacy driver. According to Nvidia that is the one to be used with a GeForce4-MX420.
I've installed from the nVidia provided installer on my old Mepis 3.4-3 install when updates to the etch repos killed the Mepis versions. It can lead to some pretty hairy troubleshooting when it doesn't work, but FYI, the error you got is referring to the linux-headers package which you don't have installed but which is needed by nVidia's installer.
