Linux Noob here ... trouble with wireless internet
Posts: 1
Alright, I'm on my Mac computer atm, having troubles getting internet on my Compaq Presario V6000 Laptop with a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-PCI card (wlan0). It detects the Network, but won't connect. I have had the internet working previously with my Laptop before, using Windows XP, but I had to download drivers using my Mac and install them off a pendrive. Mepis 6.5 came with the drivers for my Wireless Card (Or some drivers that work partially...) because the network card came up right away and recognized my Network. I turned off my encryption, and still can't connect. Been trying for 4 hours with the same result.
I've used Linux before, for about a year, on the Gnome environment (Ubuntu 6.06). This is my first time on the KDE environment, so maybe I'm missing something. Please help!
I have an AMD Sempron Processor and 64 bit nVidia graphics card if that matters
My router is an Apple Airport Extreme 2nd generation... it's worked well for months and it's continuing to work as I am using it now to post this.
There's lots of help

in the Wiki on this topic, starting with these basic steps:
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Adjust_the_wireless_connection
Please go through those carefully. If you are not then on line, post back the information requested at the bottom.
My Dell laptop (whose winmodem has a bcm43xx driver) works fine, and I am confident you will get up and running in no time.
Connecting with wireless

Hi Alfoness,
I have a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-PCI on a Lenovo C200 and it works straight away on final Mepis 6.5.
As you are testing on an open network first to test wireless, after you have checked wireless switch on laptop is one make sure ethernet cable is out and in network assistant your wireless settings is enabled on boot up then shut down laptop then switch laptop back on you should find wireless will pick up boot up.
I have found if you have ethernet in first then remove it and try to fiddle with wireless while laptop is still on it seems not to want to know. But by switching laptop on with no ethernet cable connected it always finds wireless and connects okay. Hope this helps.
