What sort of RAM do I have?

Hi all

I have been offered a RAM stick, and I need to find out if it's compatible with my computer. Can anyone tell me please how I go about checking what sort of RAM I have installed... the new stuff is PC133 SDRAM.

Thanks in anticipation

You could pull out another ram stick and check on it. I believe it should say so.

Otherwise we would need your MoBo make and such.

Thanks for your reply

I guess I could have a rummage inside the machine... I'm not even sure how to find out what sort of motherboard it has... I looked at Kinfocentre but am none the wiser. I'll get ready to look under the bonnet...

That depends on the

That depends on the motherboard your computer uses. In most cases that can be looked up on the manufacturer's website from the model# of the computer.

The memory advisor tool at http://crucial.com is probably even easier if you know your computer's brand & model#

If it's a home-built or rebuilt machine then the model# printed on the motherboard can be looked up at the same site, or at the manufacturer's site.

I should also mention that PC133 SDRAM could be in a 168 pin configuration for desktops or a 144 pin SODIMM configuration for notebooks, or, rarely, in a 100 pin packages used mostly for printers. So you need to know just a bit more about the RAM you are being offered.

There are pictures on Crucial's site that could help you tell the difference.

It's definitely 168 pin...

but I can't find out the type of motherboard without opening it up... all I know is that it's an AMD Athlon 1200 processor. I'll have a look at the Crucial website anyway... thanks for your help.

Jim

Got it, thanks

Thanks all. I opened the computer up in the end and looked at the motherboard. I was a bit wary of doing this cos I'm not exactly an expert in this field... but it was dead easy... and it all still works, phew! Smiling
