/Media and the shell

I have used MEPIS 3.3-1 for some time, and recently isntalled MEPIS 6.0-2 on another machine. The good news is that my fears from last year that changing to the Ubuntu forums would break easy access to packages turns out to have been unfounded. The Ubuntu repos seem to be far more accessible (less server clog) and better organized. I also like the emphasis on "sudo".

But I am baffled by one major change: the introduction of the "media" directory. I know how to access /mnt/cdrom via the shell, but how to I access a CD or DVD using the shell under Ubuntu/Mepis 6.0?

If you have used the icon on

If you have used the icon on the Desktop to mount your CD or DVD, then you just have to use /media/cdrom instead of /mnt/cdrom.

You can always create the /mnt/cdrom mount point and mount there manually if you prefer.

Mounting a CD via the shell

Use /media/cdrom instead of /mnt/cdrom? That is of course what I tried, and it didn't work. Then I tried some other things and they didn't work either. That's why I posted the question.

Part of my problme might be that I might not have been using the right syntax for mount. Can you tell me the exact command I'd issue in the shell (as root) to mount cdrom (or hdd?)?
