Problem with Mepis 6.5 and Matrox G400/G450 cards

Am posting this here because I haven't struck gold at MepisLovers with the problem raised in the excellent unofficial Matrox forum at: http://matrox.tuxx-home.at/viewtopic.php?t=259
Any help to resolve this would be most welcome
