No USB stick detection with new kernel
Posts: 2299
After lots of trial and error I managed to get a smoothly working 2.6.20.11 kernel. Some of the issues were getting ipw3945 to work, getting sound under VMWare, building in SATA support to allow the kernel to boot and other joyful experiences. But it has been very educational.
The only thing I have not been able to get right is support for USB devices. When I plug in a device I get lots of reassuring messages in dmesg that the device has been recognized and given a node such as /dev/sdc. However, on the HAL and KDE front silence reigns. No entry in media:/, no icon on the desktop... nada...
Does anyone know of hal or udev incompatibilities between 2.6.15 and 2.6.20? Or any other tips?

I got a vanilla source from kernel.org. I took that version because I wished to try suspend2. That was a total failure. It cannot be used with kpowersave, and when I did a suspend to disk via the hibernate script, it errored out on resuming.
I did not try pmount, I will try and let you know. Thanks for the tip

A verbose output of pmount shows that it cannot determine the file type on the device. It is a plain FAT system, and it works fine on the same machine with the stock MEPIS kernel. I checked the kernel config and it has all filesystems enabled...

IT WORKS!
I tried to mount /dev/sdb. That failed. But /dev/sdb1 is mounted to /media/sdb1. GREAT.
Now, how can I convince HAL to do it for me automagically??

That I don't know -- you might try searching on sidux or debian or gentoo forums
I thought you were upgrading from Mepis 6.5 -- I guess not. Where did the rest of the software come from?

I only installed a new kernel. I got ipw3945 from sourceforge and the rest of the drivers are built into the kernel already. I have indeed started checking out the gentoo forums. Someone had a similar problem and had to re-emerge hal. I tried removing /usr/share/hal and reinstalling, but that does nothing. See if I can get hal from edgy....

carlops,
you will probably have to configure the udev and hal files in /etc/

Silly question -- did you try pmount ??
Where did you get kernel sources? Did you upgrade anything else or change repositories to feisty or edgy ? (These are just off the wall questions -- I haven't really checked on what you need to do)
