Intel 945GM integrated graphics too slow for playing dvds on 6.5.02

I am running 6.5.02 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 everything works great except when I play DVD's the screen output is very jerky. X org is using the i810 driver I also tried the mesa driver but there is no difference. Is there any tweaking that will improve the speed? There is no problem in WindozeXP with this function. Also glxgears runs smoothly. Thanks for any help

exactly, this is a dma problem.
Try this:
- open console
- su + password
- hdparm -c1 -d1 /dev/cdrom
(not, that is Cee One and Dee One, not Cee El / Dee El)
If this does not give you errors, try playing a DVD now. If it works, we'll tell you how to make this setting stick.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I was on vacation. I agree it is a dma problem. I found that hdparm didn't work. I have a SATA drive so I used some advice from Warren and worked around this by adding hdc=noprobe to /boot/grub/menu.lst and running grub-install.
Plays videos fine now.

I would think that the driver is plenty fast enough to play DVD video--what happens when you play downloaded video from, say, www.dl.tv? Usually this indicates some kind of DMA problem with the DVD drive is slowing the data flowing into the box...
