I did have everything working but now for some reason my USB drive is not appearing in fstab when i plug it in. instead its being put into mtab as a ntfs filesystem and not as ntfs-3g so I can no longer write to it.

here is its entry in mtab

Quote:
/dev/sda1 /media/sda1 ntfs rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=077 0 0

Can anyone work out whats gone wrong as ive spent hours now trying everything and its driving me nuts.

Ok finally found what it

Ok finally found what it was.

I booted into windows and ran a disk check with the option ticked to automaticaly fix errors.
Then booted into into mepis and mounted it from KDiskFree and it is now working again fully read write.
I think I know what caused this. It was before i exit mepis after using the drive, i right click the disk icon and select "safely remove" and then I sometimes get an error telling me the drive is busy and can't be safely removed. After this happens a few times it obviously gets errors and from that point on mepis won't mount it correctly unless you boot into windows and run an error check.
Whats causing the drive busy error stopping it being safely removed.
any ideas anyone?

Well...

...do you still have some process/user that is connected to the director(y/ies) on the USB drive? For instance, if you are browsing the contents of the drive through Konqueror or in a konsole, and you don't get out of it before you try to unmount the drive, then the directory (and the drive) will be "busy". Or there may be some indexing software running trying to index the stuff on the drive and it's not done yet...

Off hand, those are a couple ideas.

Jon

The ability to comfortably use a computer is directly proportional to desire to listen, learn, and experiment, and is inversely proportional to the fear, anger, and stubbornness that you show.
