Gateway 2000 Laptop Issues

Sorry folks, I'm new to the whole linux thing, and even though I like it allot, I have found that I am just not skilled enough to solve certain hardware issues. Now, on to the problems. I have SimplyMEPIS 6.5.02 installed on my Gateway 2000 POS laptop. Though it works fine for the most part, it refuses to accept the fact that there is an Infrared card built in. It also refuses to realize that floppies are in the drive, saying that it just cant mount them. Lastly, it says there is no sound mixer, even though my laptop has a soundcard built in.(duh)
Can anyone help me? I know the system is old, but its a spare. Maybe its a driver problem??
