wireless manager problems
Posts: 26
First of all, I have wireless access, so kudos to mepis. The native bc43xx driver does not seem to work, but the ndiswrapper works with the provided driver. Again, great work mepis.
Now, I can either get it to work by manually (configuring for my ssid and wep key) or I can use wlassistant. wlassistant works, but only after the first attempt to connect to my network fails. The second attempt works quickly. Also, I cannot get the wlassistant to execute without using my root password. knetworkmanager fails everytime. It always sees my network, but always fails to connect to it at 28%.
Now, it looks like the knetworkmanager is a polished product. I would love to get it to work. And I will not undo my network security, unless someone gives me a good alternative, as I will have to reconfigure 3 other computers with no guarantee that it will solve my knetworkmanager issue. But it looks like if I can get knetworkmanager to work, that would work the best.
wlanassistant would work, if I could get it to not fail on it's first attempt and get it to run without requiring the root password.
Please give me something to try.
wifi-radar is better

wifi-radar seems to work better for me than wlanassistant. It seems to connect to my router on the first try.
However, I still want to get networkmanager to work. Removing wep will not solve it as I recall trying to connect to a router that did not have encryption, and that failed at 28% as well. Could it be some combination of nvidia driver, ndis wrapper, broadcom 4311 (dell 1390) wireless? Has anyone gotten this to work with an hp pavillion 6000 series notebook?
Please help me resolve this. I will post any successes as soon as we uncover them.
You could try Wicd

You could try Wicd (pronounced wicked) Works with Mepis, no compiling necessary, no root password needed, and you can set it to connect at boot to your network. Start from Kmenu under Internet/Wicd, or from commandline as something?/gui.py (don't remember the full pathname)
which ubuntu version

It looks pretty good. Could work great. Now, to set up the download, I need to apparently configure for the correct ubuntu version. I am not certain what mepis 6.5 64bit is closest to.
Also, when I connected to use feisty, which I am not certain is correct, it said something about it not being authenticated. So, how safe is this tool? Is there an approved repository that will vouch for it?

OK, wow! Nice tool. Wicd works perfectly and looks great. I found that mepis 6.5 is like dapper. Now, I can configure my roaming wireless connection and automatically connect at home. Perfect. Thanks much.
Knetworkmanager, this driver, and this kernel

Knetworkmanager, this driver, and this kernel are not a good combination. Many people have experienced the 28% problem with it, especially (but not exclusively) with an unprotected network.
Both wlanassistant and wifi-radar require root access AFAIK. On my bcm4306 Dell system, I use Ndiswrapper because I find the performance more consistent than using the native driver. Knetworkmanager connects with it on eth0 instead of wlan0, but that does not cause me any problems. I use wifi-radar when I am travelling or rarely when Knetworkmanager does not connect.
Don't know if this helps...
