hp notebook and hibernating
Posts: 26
I have a hp notebook and I cannot hibernate (and I am not certain how to).
Booting up hangs unless I include an option like noapic nolapic. With these, I can boot. Do these options cause the system to work but hibernate to fail?
How can I test my system for suspend to disk and suspend to ram?

Also, give us some info on the notebook model. The nx series has some serious problems with suspending.

initial attempt fails

I attempted the suggestions in the first link: updating the menu.lst and xorg.conf. However, the system locks up.
I have an HP dv6113us. It has a turion X2 64bit processor with 1gb of ram, 6150 nvidia video, seagate 80gb sata drive (60gb ntfs, 15gb ext3, .5gb swap), lightscribe dvd burner, broadcom 4311 (dell 1390) wireless.
I read some of the other links about other notebooks but did not see anything close to what I am experiencing.
Anybody had better luck with their hp? Any suggestions?

OK, let's start with hibernate.
What happens when you tell the system to hibernate? Does it initiate the process and hang, or does it shut down. Then, when booting up, does it hang immediately, or do you first see activity?

system hangs trying to hibernate

I select suspend to disk and I see a very brief popup window saying something about progress. That window goes away and the system seems to just sit there. For a moment, I cannot move the mouse. A couple of seconds later, the mouse moves but I get an wait cursor for a few seconds, then that goes away. Afterwards, the system is nonresponsive. I cannot get the main menu. I cannot get the mouse drag across the background. But the mouse moves and the system never shuts down. I have to power down and restart. Powering up performs as always.
Thanks for the assistance.

trial and error...
can you open a console, su to root and do 'powersave -U' (capital U). Please watch the output and report what you are seeing...

screen blanks and caplock flashes

I ran the powersave -U command as su. A very brief dialog popped up and went away, the screen flashed then the screen went blank (although I can see backlighting), wireless light went from blue to amber (online to offline), and my caps lock light is now flashing. System now seems to be locked. No keystroke, mouse action, or power button action seems to work. This happened before in my hibernate testing. The only thing I can do is power down and restart the system. I will not have any output if I do.
What else can I do to diagnose this?
screen blanks and caplock flashes

I performed the 'powersave -U' command as su. A dialog window opened and closed almost immediately. The screen flashed and then blanked, although I can still see backlight. The caps lock light is flashing. My wireless light changed from blue(active) to amber(inactive). Now the system seems to be locked up. Nothing short of powering down affects it. And doing so I will not be able to provide you any text response from the command.
What else can I try to diagnose the problem?
DO you have the nvidia 3d

DO you have the nvidia 3d driver enabled? If so, change it back to xv and try again.
The fact that the system does not even power down, means there is a module that should be unloaded and prevents the shutdown process from completing. As I said: trial and error, since we need to find the culprit, and even then hope we can find a way around it.

There is some info in the Ubuntu wiki:

I am not certain what you are referring to. I am using Mepis' nvidia driver but not the beryl 3d. I am not certain how to 'change it back to xv'. I'm sorry if that should be obvious.
I am familiar with the hp dv6000 page from when I was trying ubuntu. Mepis is configured much better and works far more completely. But there is good information there.
Please give me something else I can try. I am happy to experiment to resolve this. Any other suggestions?
Much discussed topic!

There is some help in the Wiki:
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Suspend
If that does not work for you, use the search box for this forum, as there have been excellent discussions on this for particular machines. Here are a couple to give you an idea:
