Upgrade Warning: Cannot Authenticate...
Hi to all. Just installed the latest Mepis and is very, very GOOD !!! Just wanted to ask one question: When I wanted to "Upgrade" the system (using Synaptic), I get this Warning: "You are about to install software that can't be authenticated...", and it goes on to tell me about possible malicious software. Why do I get this warning? Should I be concerned that I may get virus or something bad if I proceed with the upgrade?
Many thanks,
serge.
Jon, thank you very much for

Jon, thank you very much for your reply. Very much appreciated. Just to mention that all repositories are all "original", i.e., I didn't add anything. I will also try the
"apt-listbugs" as you suggested.
Again, thanks for your help.

Not To Worry

Don't worry about it Serge. There are multiple "repositories" where various software packages come from, and some of the stuff currently comes from the Ubuntu repositories, and others from the Mepis repositories. If you are getting "standard packages" (the ones you see in synaptic) from "standard repositories" (the ones configured on your system right now), then you will be ok.
If you were "experimenting" and getting packages from all over the place, or "daily builds" (extremely new, possibly buggy, packages) or going to questionable sites, then I would worry.
One optional package that I would recommend that you load is one called "apt-listbugs". It will help do some bug checking on subsequent package updates. It might cut down just a bit on the "authentication" warnings, but it will not get rid of them. Also, if you search through synaptic, looking for "keychain", you will find various lists of "authorized keys". None of this NEEDS to be loaded, but it might help

The ability to comfortably use a computer is directly proportional to desire to listen, learn, and experiment, and is inversely proportional to the fear, anger, and stubbornness that you show.
