"uninstallable" dependencies
Posts: 5
I've just finished installing Mepis 6.5 after recovering from a hard disk crash. I was not successful using the synaptic package manager to install additional software such as gtkpod and evince because synaptic could not install the dependencies. When I refreshed the package list, synaptic failed to download a lot of files and says it couldn't download some repository indexes.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Well, I never did

Well, I never did update my mepis system after my installation. I just refreshed my package list and synaptic downloaded the list again. While downloading, it showed a lot of files that it failed to get from the repository-- the dapper ones-- which left me puzzled because Mepis 6.5 is based on Ubuntu LTS (my OS I used, along with puppy linux, prior to the hd crash)! Right now Synaptic shows 64 packages that need to be updated and there could be more that that had the dapper repository/ies been available. Maybe that also explains why the Open Office suite crashes.
I will try to update my system during the wee hours of the morning so that downloading will be faster. Thank you for your help.
updating aftermath..

After updating my system, synaptic still shows 7 softwares that needed updating---most of them coming from the OpenOffice package because of the error that occurred while installing updates. Synaptic returns this message while installing updates:
Strict.pm did not return a true value at /usr/lib/perl/5.8/File/Glob.pm line 3
Right now OpenOffice still crashes and dependencies for gtkpod and evince are still "uninstallable."

remove OO.o
and then put in a replacement install
having got everything else sweet
but how to get everything

but how to get everything else sweet is a problem also. Even the debian package for gtkpod got me into a trail of packages that are needed to be installed first, and then packages that are already installed but are not configured. I am considering reinstalling Mepis but am also wondering why the OpenOffice suite was not working upon installation while it is working when I rum Mepis "live."
First Things First

Bummer that you had a hard disk crash comisilekootsi
First things first though. After you "installed" Mepis 6.5, did you do an update/upgrade of packages in Mepis before you did anything else? In other words, completely ignore installing NEW packages and simply bring Mepis up-to-date before trying to add things. You need to do that so that you can be sure that Mepis itself is working before complicating your life with additional packages.
So is that what you did? What were the results? Did you get any types of error messages when you updated Mepis? Since it's been a while since Mepis 6.5 was released, I'm guessing that upon initial install you would have been greeted with approx 80 packages that needed to be updated? Did you do that in synpatic? Also, even though the little update monitor will show you some number of packages to be updated, I always like to hit the "Reload" button in synaptic, and then click the "Mark all updates", and then Apply. Did you do something along those lines? What messages did you get?
One BIG ERROR that you might have had was caused by the Feisty repository no longer being available. If you got a whole bunch of error messages at the begining of the Reload, simply go into your repository list and uncheck the repo. that has Feisty in it. Do another Reload and go from there.
Whew! OK, if that went alright, THEN what happens with the two packages that you want to install?
