Mepis getting edged out

It sounds bad, just today after long time i looked into distrowatch.com and was shocked to find that Mepis has slipped to 7 th position. So i looked at Mepis forum topic to discover that most of the people are complaining about wireless and sound in Mepis 6.5 release. Quite a possibility this is pulling Mepis down.
Other day i was trying new version of Puppy linux..a distro i am not very fond of to start with...but i was surprised to find that how much it has improved..not just in terms of eye candy but also wireless connectivity and sound configuration..and it's size is merely 85MB..
I am sure Warren and his team is much talented compared to Puppy linux team..and i sincerely hope Mepis will once again start focussing in terms of more and more device drivers( which was high point of Mepis from 3.3 to 6.0) rather than 3D graphics/Beryl..which are supported only on Nvidia..and are quite useless in terms of day to day computer activity....
Like i read somewhere on internet a review about Mepis...that it is good distro..but unfortunately lacks direction..
I am using Mepis for nearly 2 years now..and i only wish it well.

Well, I don't have a

Well, I don't have a wireless problem using Mepis and I have it installed on two laptops. Do you have a wireless problem?
Never had a sound problem with Mepis and I'm sure I have done over 100 installs. Do you have a sound problem?
I have Puppy installed on an older laptop with 32MB of RAM and it's great for that purpose, getting the Internet working was a chore, but that was well over a year ago, I'm sure it's easier to install today.
If you don't care for Beryl, it's easy to remove and gain the extra HDD space for something else.
For me and my general office needs(networking, fax, scan, copy, print and documents) nothing beats SimplyMEPIS 6.5, just wish it did a little better job with Windows video, for that I use Debian Sid, but for office use Debian is just to freaking hard to configure.
Mepis lacks direction..huh...well, thanks for the input.

I have been using MEPIS for over 4 years now and even when I tried to find something else (like PCLOS) I always came back to MEPIS.
My feeling about Distrewatch is: it's good to see what is new but it doesn't address what is stable. To stay in the top 4 on Distrowatch you have to be releasing a "new" version about every 2 months. If you watch it enough you will see what I mean. So if you are looking for a distro that is constantly changing pick one of the top 5. For me, I'm glad MEPIS has hit a winner and I am more than willing to ride it out.
Just my 2 cents
I agree with you

I agree with you totally-have tried many other distros but the most stable and best running is MEPIS.Thanks mepis for such a stable running distro.John

I too have recently tried other distro's to see how they have progressed and i must admit PCLOS is looking really good now. However, after just a week of using it I went to install something and as is usual with the RPM package management system, I ran into the usual dependency problems.
I spent ages tracking down each dependency only to find that to some of them depended on others. I give Up !!!
If PCLOS were to switch over to a debian/ubuntu based distro I'm sure it would be a lot lot better.
I still believe mepis is the best by far. I do agree though, mepis needs to keep up with ubuntu a little more as its falling behind quite a lot now. The only other thing that mepis could really do with is a major cosmetic facelift.
This is where PCLOS is definately streets ahead, mepis needs nice looking icons like folders (not plain platinum) and a more eye catching theme and fonts etc.
I know you can download themes & icons because ive done it to my mepis install but it takes ages.
Anyway, I'm stickin with the best "long live Mepis".
Thanks warren.
I agree totallt MEPIS is a

agree that it is better to add options that most people can really use v latest that does not improve function. i like mepis but really like dsl and puppy since small and load into ram--no hd or usb boot issues. just load and go. smile.
consider a small 90-180 meg version of mepis [you know the core stuff to keep]

MEPIS remains a desktop leader

I try quite a few distributions out, and I will sometimes use a distribution for a day or for a weekend if it really looks interesting. PCLinuxOS 2007 falls into that category. Looks like a solid desktop system, solid in many ways, similar to MEPIS in many ways. In the end, it still is based on RPM packaging. I do have a Live CD of PCLinuxOS and I use it most often in Live mode when I am running remotely on a laptop. But the best testimony I can give about SimplyMEPIS is that it continues to be my every day desktop system, the one I keep and the one I come back to, as well as the one I use nearly every day.

I have been using LinuxMint 3.0 KDE community Edition the last few days to see how it compares to Mepis seeing as its ubuntu/debian based. I must say I am well impressed. It has most things working straight away with very little work to do. It looks good and is really slick to use. Also I noticed my webcam worked without any setting up which it has never done in Mepis.
The only thing I have had to do is install ntfs-config & a few apps I prefer such as synaptic to use well as the "adept" software installer which it comes with as standard.
With it being based on Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) all the software is also up to date as well.
I'm not saying I've been lured away from Mepis just yet because it would have to prove itself as reliable for more than a few days to do that.
I have used LinuxMint, too, pretty nice

Linux Mint is another nice distribution. I do not believe it measures up to MEPIS in overall stability and the verification of applications working well together, but it is quite an interesting and compelling distribution. These are the ones that have competed with MEPIS for time: Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu, Ubuntu CE, Freespire, PCLinuxOS, DreamLinux, and LinuxMint. Of them, I really liked Ubuntu CE because of the nice additions to the base Ubuntu for a specific target market - Christians using the Web, I also found LinuxMint interesting, but did not go with it because it did not have a KDE setup; now it does.
SimplyMEPIS won't be easily beaten or taken off my desktop. It was #2 to Libranet back when I had Libranet as my every day desktop, but I found myself liking MEPIS and using it often. When Libranet went away, MEPIS was the logical successor. I use many distros, but I tend to standardize on one or two of them. If I went to any other desktop it would probably be a heavily customized version of Debian. I do use that a lot. But I like to have a stable every day desktop, and for that MEPIS wins. Oh yes, I like Sidux too. I am using it Live from a laptop system. Still, MEPIS is more stable and gets the bulk of the air time and that is unlikely to change.
PCLinuxOS is "Radically Simple", but SimplyMEPIS "Simply works!"

There are a lot of nice distributions out there without a doubt, but SimplyMEPIS continues to have a nice blend of the stable and the current software.
I have versions of 6.0, 6.5.02, and 7.0 (beta test) on two of my systems. All of them work completely well, and I use them on an almost daily basis, except when I am testing other systems. They continue to be stable, even the test versions! No reason to use anything else!
