Prospective Mepis User

Hello, I'm pretty new to Linux and my first distro was Ubuntu. I've since become a "distro hunter", always looking for the best one out there. SimplyMepis got some good reviews and so I tried it out. I find the interface slightly more "clunky" than Gnome in Ubuntu. I tested it using the LiveCD but I'm wondering if anyone here can compare Ubuntu and SimplyMepis. Why should I switch? What does SimplyMepis have that Ubuntu doesn't?
Thanks in advance,
Matt Segstro
Mepis just works

Mepis is easy to use.
It works on most hardware with no problems.
The live CD offers options for repairing your installation if you do have difficulties.

Only you know what you like. I can list a lot of reasons why I like SimplyMEPIS such as the extremely fast and easy installs, great hardware detection, I prefer KDE, the great packages that come with the basic install, and the great people here and at MEPISLovers. But those are just my reasons.
Mepis & Ubuntu

I have been using Ubuntu for a while now both in my business and at home. Recently I have tried Mepis and am pleased with what I am seeing. I would have to agree with the moderator's statement above; if you want to use Gnome Ubuntu is hard to beat. But when I tried Kubuntu I found it too cumbersome for my usage. I like the Mepis rendition of KDE much better; I think it is easier for me to deal with. And over all I think KDE gives me a little more flexibility to do the things I want than Gnome did.
Just my two cents.
Not sure why but ....

I have been using Mepis for year(s) now and when I get really
upset about something NOT working...I have always been able
to fix it myself, and there are alot of really dedicated,
friendly types in the Mepis community. I must admit I have
been seduced by the "pretty school of fish" hoardes chasing
after ubuntu, but when I heard that Warren was going back
to Debian roots because Ubuntu makes you start from scratch
all over again each new distro release...well.........
that iiiiiissssss why I hate Microsoft soooo much in addition
to treating "the stupid human" so badly not allowing you
access to under the hood. I want a distro that I can mod,
people who care about the distro not money, or fanaticism,
and install once upgrade forever... when Ubuntu finally
settles down and gets it right maybe we will see that.
INSTALL ONCE UPGRADE FOREVER
NOT FOREVER REINSTALL......

If you like KDE use MEPIS,

If you like KDE use MEPIS, Ubuntu made KDE second class citizen the first releases didn't even include KDE, personally I don't trust them when they say that they pay now the same attention to KDE as to GNOME. If you like GNOME you are probably better off with Ubuntu.
And don't wait for people to tell you what are their reasons, try MEPIS and discover your reason, to stay with Ubuntu or to switch to MEPIS.
