Which is the best package installer for mepis? Kpackage, synaptic, adept or automatix.I have tried them all and they work. There are many others like klik-yum -bitrock-autopackage.I was just wondering which would be the best.I know many others have also tried them out. Thanks for your input.john

Synaptic comes standard with

Synaptic comes standard with MEPIS. It is IMO more powerful than Kpackage, but Kpackage offers the possibility to install local packages.

Adept can be installed if you prefer it.

Automatix is NOT a package manager. It is a set of scripts that use the apt-get command line utilities. Since Automatix modifies the sources.list, general recommendation is to be VERY careful with it. AFAIK it does not really offer anything that cannot be installed via Synaptic. Feel free to use it, but keep a keen eye on what it is doing.

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

Just to muddy-up the waters

Just to muddy-up the waters a little bit, I'll take the opposite side of the fence with Carlops on the KPackage/Synaptic comparison. Between those two front ends, I prefer KPackage, for it's logical package grouping and local installation options.

apt-get beats 'em both--hands down--though. Eye-wink
