How do I get my cd to copy files?

Hello folks,

I want to copy a file or two onto a cd but when I put a blank cd in the computer I do not get any dialogue window to ask me what I want to do. And if I select the file and move it to ... there is no cd to move it onto.

... any ideas?

Please note that I have only just started using MEPIS (which I am totally impressed with!) ... and I am a non-techno user ... so please be patient with me.

Use K3B application, it's in

Use K3B application, it's in Media section, or start it by typing k3b in konsole or "run command"

K3b

Thanks for getting back to me AdrianTM,

... Is K3B really appropriate - all I want to do is to copy a small file from my hard disk onto a readable CD ... and be able to do that repeatedly (ie copy more small files onto the same CD)?

You'll see a "Create a Data

You'll see a "Create a Data Project" choice when you start K3B.

That lets you browse any folders you want and "drag and drop" the files (or entire folders) you want included on the CD (from the browse box into the project box). You can also start more than one data project at the same time (they'll appear in separate tabs).

When you have everything there you want included, press burn.

See the instructions it gives you on this screen capture:

K3B

Hi Jim C,

Thanks for that ... K3b seemed to copy the file over to the CD.

... Now I need to ask what is probably a stupid question ... to test what I had done I put my CD back into the computer ... and nothing happens ... I suppose I am expecting a dialogue window to appear and ask me what I want to do - just like windows ... so can you advise me as to how I can read the file on the CD - and copy it to the hard disk?

Click on it

Just click on the icon you have for your CD on your Desktop and Konquerer (the file browser) should open, letting you see it's contents. It shows you the folders and files on a CD, just like it does for any other drive/partition you have.

You'll also see it under "Storage Media" (along with other drives in the system) if you click on the Home Icon in your system tray and select Services (star icon) from the left side of the screen that pops up.

CD not on desktop

No icon appears on the desktop when I put the cd into the cd drive. Neither is there anything in Home.

The icon does not appear,

The icon does not appear, since you need to configure it to do so.

First question: have you installed all updates? You definitely should. Click on the box icon to fire up synaptic and mark all upgrades. Then click apply.

To configure CD icon to pop up: right click desktop > configure > behaviour > device icons. Mark entries for mounted and unmounted CD and DVDs

2nd possibility: Konqueror. This is the home icon. You need to activate the view of your storage media. You do this by clicking on the last icon in the vertical icon bar on the left side of the konqueror window

3rd possibility: There is an icon with 3 coloured boxes in the systray. it is called Kwikdisk. It gives you direct access to all storage media on your machine.

I also think you need to check out the Wiki to get the grasp of some basic things: www.mepis.org/docs

Newbie or not Newbie, there's always a question

CD appears

Many thanks carlops ... it now all works a treat!

... I'll now go and study wiki with expectant enthusiasm.
