We saw error messages regarding Splashy and MD arrays during the bootup but almost everything we tested worked. This seems very impressive for a pre beta. Staying somewhat independent from Ubuntu and having a more stable upgrade process are good ideas since Ubuntu seems to have some Microsoftian tendancies. We like the fact that you can see the boot process and can easily have an admin or root account in Mepis (which you can't in Ubuntu). Being able to update to a new Mepis system after the Mepis two year development cycle like you can in Ubuntu when they come out with a new system would be very helpful. Mepis seems like a good candidate to be preinstalled on new computers because it is so easy to work with and stable.
