Using Wireless G USB Network Adapter
Posts: 5
Hi!
I have installed Mepis 6.5 on my laptop. I have had this Belkin Wireless USB adapter working Ok when I had Windows XP installed on my Laptop.
Would somebody kindly tell me in simple language how to make is work using Mepis 6.5
I have a Belkin Router downstairs connected to two computers, one with Linux and the other with Windows XP, both have a successful lan connection to the Router. I can access the internet via the router if I bring my Laptop downstairs by a direct lan connection, but I want to use the Wireless adapter to connect to the internet on my Laptop upstairs
I would be grateful for help.

Many thanks for your quick response to my query.
I have Belkin54g Wireless G USB Netwoerk Adapter.
iwconfig replies -
lo no wireless connection
eth0 no wireless connection
I have tried rausb0 but there is no connection with this.
I have established that the adapter has network established with eth0. When I click on the icon in panel bar at the bottom of the screen, it tells me so. Also when I restart the network it tells me connection is established.
I have entered the HEX key in WEP and this is accepted.
However I still have no entrance to the Internet.
I can't explain this. Nor can I explain the negative output with iwconfig.
Perhaps you can help more. If you can I would be grateful.
It might have been an update

What does this give you?
lsusb
What does give you?
lsmod
Paste the results and that will let us see what adapter is being detected and what drivers are being used.
Did you update your installation since installing it (mark all upgrades, apply)?
If so, that might be your problem.
My Belkin Wireless G USB adapter quit working after I did that recently.
I only noticed a handful of updates (I remember seeing some packages starting with libxxx, and I had not updated it in a while. But, one of them must have caused a conflict with my adapter.
Mine now has the same symptoms (showing up as eth0 under SimplyMEPIS). It's also not using the rt2570 driver anymore (since I see a 0 beside it when I use lsmod to see what drivers are being used)
It worked fine for a long time with 6.5.02. But, something stepped on it during a recent update, and I have not found a solution yet. I was hoping that it was just a fluke with an update to somoething I had installed. But, if you've got the same symptoms with the same adapter, it may be a more serious issue than that.
If you boot from a Live CD, do you see rausb0 show up that way when using iwconfig from a console?
If so, that tells me that your issue is probably the same as mine (one of the updates stepped on something related to this adapter). If not, you may have a different chipset.
If I can come up with anything that makes mine work again, I'll let you know. I can tell you that it worked fine before the last updates I did via Synaptic.
I would go ahead and post the results of those commands to make sure you've got the same adapter that I do.

I have a Belkin USB N1 card and it works perfectly. I haven't updated almost anything.
Which version of Ndiswrapper are you using?
It doesn't need ndiswrapper

Many Belkin Wireless G USB adapters have native drivers in many Linux distos if they are using the ralink rt61 or rt2570 chipsets (as mine does).
Mine works fine with a number of Linux distros "straight from the box" without any extra drivers or the use of ndiswrapper.
It also works fine with SimplyMEPIS 6.5.02. Or rather, it *did* (past tense) work fine until the last time I upgraded packages using Synaptic.
Right this minute, I have no network Access from SimplyMEPIS (even though it's worked great for quite a while until my last update).
So, I'll probably just backup my personal files and install the new beta instead when time permits. I'm using Sidux 2007 in the interim.

This does not mean much to me, except the USB adapter is recognised as plug in.
I am coming to think that wireless Network adapters are rather like dial-up modems with Linux. and you need to get one that works with Linux. Perhaps you know one.
It took me a very long time to find a dial-up modem that worked with Linux. This is Zoom sold by PC World.
On another subject - do you know anything about hard drive defrag for Linux. Is there a utility for this?
Many thanks for you responce to me query.

37 and 38 in the 'B' listing (for Belkin) describe getting your card to work with ndiswrapper!

Should be working in no time

Which Belkin?

I've got a Belkin F5D7050 USB Wireless G with an rt2570 chipset.
But, some of these used a different chipset.
What do you get when you open a console and type this?
iwconfig
If it's like mine, you'll probably see rausb0 listed as an interface.
If you see it, you'll need to go to the MEPIS Network Assistant (under the icon in your tray that looks like a monitor with a screwdriver over it). Then, enter the ESSID of your router and click apply before going to the interfaces screen (otherwise it will lose the changes when you change tabs).
Then, go to the interfaces tab, select rausb0 (if that's your adapter), make sure the start at boot is checked and click OK and reboot.
I leave mine setup for DHCP (so that my router provides an IP Address for it). Most routers will use DHCP by default.
Don't try to use the "start on ok/apply" option. You'll need to leave that unchecked and reboot to get it working in 6.5 (from my experience with it anyway). If it's talking to your router OK, you should be connected after a reboot once the settings are in the Mepis Network Assistant.
You may want to get it working without any encryption turned on in your router first. Then, try to add it if needed. I don't use encryption with mine
