According

According to:
http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting ( http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=Lexmark )
the Lexmark Z45 has only partial support. This is generally due to a manufacturer refusing to disclose interface and protocol information for (usually) USB printers that are proprietary in the way that they interact with the host computer.

Visit http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Lexmark-Z45 and follow the instructions on that page to attempt to get partial support for your printer. This is an improvement over past years when the printer was considered a plastic paperweight, as progress has been made in deciphering the mumbo-jumbo that Lexmark used to obfuscate the workings of the printer.

Writing to Lexmark and expressing your dissatisfaction with the way they accommodate non-windoze OSses is the best approach to obtaining a solution to the full support for Linux issue.

HP and Epson are generally better printer purchase considerations (for future reference).

Lexmark Z45

Hi, I try to install Lexmark z45 in Mepis and nothing!!! You said: "HP and Epson are generally better printer...", but I have the printer z45. Are you saying that I have to trash my printer?

I want to migrate my Suse 9.2 (older linux!!!) to Mepis but I need to solve this problem first.

The solution is to use Windows??? I hope not. Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

With respect to your

With respect to your printer, I am not aware of a solution better than the one I pointed you to. This is where Lexmark dropped the ball, not Linux.

I'm finding prices of $27.00 to $36.00 for the printer; which is right in the range of the cost for a single ink cartridge for the machine.

Pragmatically speaking, it's simply not worth keeping--particularly since Lexmark has not chosen to facilitate its use with Linux. I've done exactly that--throwing away printers--when it's time to replace cartridges, when I purchased the printer for $24.00, and a set of replacement cartridges cost $50.00 (Canon).

No. The solution is to purchase only good quality equipment manufactured by corporations which actually support standards in their manufacturing, making certain that driver support is complete for the major operating systems in use--this includes Linux.

Sorry.
