Mepis Mail

We have hotmail and Yahoo Mail. Why not Mepis Mail. I myself would rather login in to a Linux site rather than a windows based one. I know it would be a lot of work but I think it would be nice. I use my laptop a lot on the road. I like to keep all my mail in 1 place. Thanks for listening and have a great day.

Gmail privacy concerns

If you haven't seen them already, here are a couple of sites which discuss the privacy aspects of Gmail and Google generally:

Sure, I read some of the privacy concerns.
The only 'safe' email seems to be encrypted email. I am not yet paranoid enough to encrypt regular email. You must also know that non-encrypted email can be read and "harvested" at all servers that it passes through.

Here's a mail you should check out if your concerned about privacy. They have free and paid accounts, max of $16 a year. They will also do mail for a domain, don't know what that costs. P.S. I have a free account with them, do not have any other connection with them.

Do they encrypt e-mail? If they don't any promise of privacy is illusory as Ko pointed out.

Sorry Adrian
Sorry I did not give you the info you wanted. I gave the site link so that you could check it out. For me to give you all the info, I would have to copy the site here. Would you believe everything I said here or would you check it out for yourself? Spam, virus proction and encryption are there, no imap yet.
If you do look it over, please let me and others know what you think of it.

Yeah I see now, however to have encryption you need to pay, I prefer a free e-mail service with a free GPG, that's the perfect combination for me (that of course when I e-mail secrets of state, otherwise I don't care about privacy that much -- I just apply the common sense policy "say in e-mail what you won't be sorry to see published in a newspaper")

Thanks Towwire, I will have a look at their service, probably after their IMAP option is launched (since I've all but abandoned POP anyway).
@Ko,
Yes, I appreciate that email can also be snooped on by servers en route. However, it's the massive "industrial" scale of Google's analytical machinery which is alarming, particularly if you start linking the content of Gmail emails to stored Google searches.
As the old joke goes: "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you!"
Ever considered Gmail ?

One nice thing about email is that it is platform-independent.
Having access to all your email -while on the road and using linux- can be real by using Gmail. Setting up an extensive "email-server-park" like that by Mepis is cost prohibitive.
Ask again when Mepis is being used by 25 million users.....
