Dual Booting
Posts: 3
I was affraid before my drive crashed.
But then I had to do things over anyway.
I loaded up Windows XP with the minimum or should I say I deleted a lot after setup.( The whole Control Panel list)
I had more things that I use on CDs anyway.
So I the tried MEPIS install and kept Windows at the beginning of the drive.
I used the QT Parted and set up my Linux partition. I did not make a swap drive as I was not sure how to. Then it asked how to set up GRUB and put it in Master boot record. I rebooted and everthing worked fine. I have yet to have a problem in MEPIS without the swap partion. Could someone tell me when I'm going to need one?
You need one only if you run

You need one only if you run out of memory, so it depends how much memory you have, however it's a good idea to have one because it will make your system more stable -- if a program starts to eat memory it will take more time till it will bring down the system -- you get a change to stop it in time. You can always set up a Swap file, which is easier to do, read here: www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Swap_file
Theoretically that might be slower than a separate partition, but it might not matter if it hardly gets used, but it's a good idea to have it there just for peace of mind.
