SaxenOS 2.1 beta1 uploading

It's done. After 10 hrs of work today I'm uploading SaxenOS 2.1 beta 1 right now. Warrens M7 beta 1 solved the live boot problems for me both in normal and aufs boot modes.

This is a german-only release (sorry folks). Maybe I'll add some more languages but right now it spots too many business applications for german users (online banking, tax declaration, bookkeeping and invoicing software) to be really useful for others.

Anyway, here is a lil list of my inclusions/changes:

- Sid instead of Etch
- Fully SaxenOS themed
- XFCE 4.4.1 desktop (w/ "setxkbmap de" in autostart ... something is wrong with my locale settings =)
- Full OOo
- VLC replaces the plethora of players/plugins
- Some uncommon apps like lostirc
...

I'll keep you guys updated for the download address - 608 MB iso, 1.8 GB installed.

Best!

I'll give it a try

Good to hear this news.
Can you give us non-German speakers some tips so we can at least test it out.
What sort of hardware is this version suitable for Stibs? Minimum RAM?

BTW antiX-M7-beta1 will be available very soon and I also have had a problem with the locale settings.

Testing it in other languages

How to test it as a non-german speaker:

1) Edit the grub commandline, delete lang=de or change it to your language.
2) After boot login w/ demo/demo or root/root
3) Open a terminal and issue "setxkbmap us" (or your lang)
4) Testing can be done ...

For an install I recommend deleting
/etc/skel/.config/autostart/setxkbmap.desktop
/root/.config/autostart/setxkbmap.desktop
~/.config/autostart/setxkbmap.desktop
first. Minstall starts from a terminal or from the menu (run command - in German: Programm ausführen: gksu minstall).

There will be still german modifications in the menu but you'll get the idea, e.g. "Programme" = "Programs". If you're unsure, http://dict.leo.org =)

Minimum RAM is 256 MB (worked nicely w/ 256 in Qemu but 128 + swap should work too).

Cheers!

Download address

The ISO: http://saxenos.com/wb/modules/download_gallery/dlc.php?file=30
The MD5SUM: http://saxenos.com/wb/modules/download_gallery/dlc.php?file=31

I'm curious about my bugs ... already found some just from thinking about my work yesterday.

Downloading now

Since I am comfortable in German, I should be able to get through it pretty well, will let you know what happens.

Nice going

Jerry

Erster Blick

Ausgezeichnet! Das ganze Aussehen gefällt mir, alles ist leicht zu überblicken, und ich kann finden was ich suche ohne Schwierigkeiten.

Einziger Vorschlag für jetzt: Control Center im Hauptmenü.

Gratuliere

LOL!

Hi Jerry!

Thx for the flowers =) ...

About your proposal to put KDECC into the menu:

KDE isn't included in SaxenOS, not even a trace of it, so no KDECC ... lol! Most of what you may need is in the System menu and in the Desktop settings.

Cheers!

Right

I just meant the corresponding center in Xfce, didn't know the name.

Fixing my biggest bug

I made a bug I could spank myself for:

I included the amazing bookeeping and invoicing software LinHaBu (Shareware, 90 day trial, german only, http://www.mcrichter.de). It doesn't appear in the menu for demo because the permissions are wrong.

To fix it in an installed system, open a terminal, become root and issue these commands
cd /opt
chown -R root:root Lin-HaBu/
chmod -R 755 Lin-HaBu/

Some seconds later the LinHaBu item appears in the Office-menu.

Cheers!

3 things for now.

1. I gave it a test in Virtualbox, firstly using 128 MB RAM plus 128 swap, and it was painfully slow Sad I then used 256 MB RAM and 128MB swap and performance was very, very good, including openoffice Smiling A nicely put together OS stibs.

2. A bug I noticed was that mc doesn't open. It only opens a termianal.

3. I'm sure you would get xtra feedback if you posted on Mepislovers forum too.

Thx for the test =)

Yeah, I know ... I just need some more nods from the authors of the software I included.

Cheers!
