Skype on 6.5

The recent furore over the Skype outage triggered me into giving it
a try. (The service is supposed to be back to normal now.)
On 3.4.3 it "just works", but on 6.5 when I call the Skype test
service I cannot hear myself played back. Anyone else had a similar
experience, or is it just me?

Thanks, Carlops. Synaptic

Thanks, Carlops.
Synaptic shows "skype-static, 1.3.0.53-2medibuntu1" as available.
Is that the correct version to use?
No, get it from skype.com

No,
get it from skype.com here: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/
Get the dynamic / static version (though this very much sounds like a contradiction in terms....)

Thanks again!
Update: It works OK. BTW "dynamic" and "static" appear to be
two different versions - I used "static".

The version in 6.5 has a known microphone issue. However, first make sure to raise the input volumes in the mixer.
If that doesn't work, you can install the static version from skype.com. Do NOT try to install the MEPIS version they offer there, it doesn't work.
