Performance not optimal

Hello all,
i use 6.5 (all current updates) as the only OS for all my work on my Acer Aspire 1642 laptop.
Beside that Firefox and Skype is unstable and the soundchip needed some hand-work to be recognized (hda-intel) everything is fine so far.
What wonders me is the performance. I have 1 Gb Ram in this system and a p4 1,4 Ghz (or 1,7 if i am not mistaken). Its a little slow for my taste. I tested for example Ulteo Linux and it runs much faster. Anyways I value the general stability of Mepis and I would like to know why it runs so slow and what can i do to increase the speed of the system a little...

Start-up seems ok, although I see other distros booting up much faster.
The thing is that some applications start up slowly (firefox, open office). With 1gb RAM they should come up faster. Maybe it is just a subjective feeling. When I see some apps loading up in Dreamlinux for example, then it is a real difference. 1Gb RAM that should be a TURBO or not?
What exactly runs so slow? Boot up speed, all apps opening, certain apps opening?anticapitalista

I actually run Unixbench and MEPIS is much faster than many other distros -- that's not subjective that's a benchmark, as for some application starting slower it might depend on the application itself and some settings, for example you can set up OpenOffice to use more memory and it will start faster but that's not optimal in general for everybody, anyway OpenOffice and Firefox are dogs on most of the distros I tried even with 2GB memory -- BTW, what matters in the case of OpenOffice might be the harddisk access time and cache more than memory, see if other distros set up hdparm other than MEPIS... (run as root "hdparm /dev/hda" replace hda with your drive name)
