New Mirror for MEPIS

Morgantown, WV; September 5, 2003 - Antonin Sprinzi at the Vienna Univ. of Technology in Austria has kindly agreed to provide a master mirror for MEPIS Linux. Downloads are available from:

ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/mepis/

http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/mepis/

rsync://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/mepis/

Resume and Mirror Speed

As far as I know, resume is managed on the receiving end. I don't recall ever having it not work with a particular server. Since tuwien is a major mirror site and is quite busy, I would expect them to support any and all features that would help downloads to be faster and better.

If you're running on Linux already, you might get better results by using rsync. It definitely does support resume and the rsync ports are often allocated their own bandwidth, since rsync is mostly used by other servers to synchronize their mirrors, often that bandwidth is available.

To get the MEPIS isos with rsync and put them in the current directory, you would use a command something like this:
rsync -avr --progress --stats --partial gd.tuwien.ac.at::linux/mepis/*.iso .

FYI, in MEPIS I use Konqueror to download. It uses the Kget part which supports resume. But I just do it because I'm accustomed to the NExT-like ability to browse the remote machine.

Using rsync

I rechecked the commandline and it looks correct to me. Also I verified it before posting.

If the connection timed out, it either means that tuwien is very busy and since it's early evening in Europe that's possible, or it could mean that the rsync port is closed by a firewall at your end.

In fact anytime you run a new protocol, if you get a can't connect message and you have a firewall, it probably means that the port is closed. To the best of my knowledge rsync uses port 873.

The coredump is an artifact at tuwien and I have no idea why it's there. Maybe something crashed as Antonin was setting up the directory. Just ignore it.

Massive Overload

> Probably a massively overloaded server due to everybody wanting this great distro at once.

chuckle ... most probably ... I really wonna see this weekends download logs!
