Another External Test

I'm beginning to think that if you have to use a modem you can forget Linux. The new external modem works in XP after I installed the drivers, it's on Com1
Tried on SM_6.5.02_32. Kinfo did not show a modem but showed the serial port 03F8-03ff so opened Kconsole and typed in dmesg and no modem there either but serial port at dev/ttyS0.
So went to Kppp to find the modem, no go. I tried the whole dev list and the only thing I received was Looking for modem and then could not find modem. This is what the instruction that came with the modem said to do if the modem could not be found.
External Serial: Linux Installation Instructions(Console Mode)
1. Log in as root in a console.
2. Enter the password at the password prompt.
3. At the console prompt, type minicom -s, or, if you want to see display in color, type minicom -s -c on.
4. You will get the [configuration] menu.
5. Arrow down to Serial Port setup and press Enter.
6. Look at line A and press A to edit the line: COM1 should read /dev/cua0 and COM2 should read /dev/cua1 (and note the S is upper case and everything else is lower case). [Note: To use the external modem to both call out and answer, change to dev/ttyS0 (, 1, 2, or 3).]
It was set to dev/tty8 which I changed to dev/ttyS0
7. Press Esc after you make any necessary changes on line A -- this will bring you back to the [configuration] menu.
8. Arrow down to Save Setup as dfl and press Enter. You will get a Configuration Saved message -- this will bring you back to the [configuration] menu.
9. Arrow down to Exit and press Enter. If you have set up the modem correctly, it should now say initializing modem and bring up some AT commands. If the modem does not respond correctly, make certain the modem is plugged into the correct COMport and the address is setup correctly in the BIOS. If you would like to prove that the modem dials internally, you can try this after you get the AT commands: type ATX3DT123456 [enter]. If you hear the modem dialing without the telephone line, the modem setup is finished and you can continue to the next step.
Hey modem lights worked and it gave some AT commands, so I entered ATX3DT123456 and it dialed.
10. To exit minicom and go back the console prompt, press CTRL A then X.
Went back to Kppp used dev/ttyS0 still can not find modem, tried them all again no go. Rebooted and did it again only now minicom said dev/ttyS0 for the serial port, but everything else is still the same.
Can someone help to change this from a NO Go to Solved
