Bug in OpenOffice.org 2.3

I see that OOo has been upgraded to 2.3 in the MEPIS 7.0 beta. Don't know if this is true of 6.5, but thought it worth pointing out that there is a bug in OOo 2.3 which may affect some users. Open Document files created in KWord no longer load correctly into OOo Write -- no matter how the Standard and Heading styles are defined in KWord, they now load into OOo as Times New Roman. It probably won't affect many users, but having a slow computer, I tend to use KWord most of the time, and only load up the beast that is OOo when I want to do something KWord can't do. Previously, .odt files have been pretty interchangeable, but not any more. I've put in a bug report with OOo, but thought people here might want to be aware of it before upgrading.

Hmm, I'm starting to think

Hmm, I'm starting to think it's something odd with my system. I also discovered that Calc files with notes attached to cells save in .xls format without the notes; and .xls files created with notes attached in MS Excel cause OOo 2.3 to crash. But no-one else over on the OOo forums is getting this behaviour. So either it's something MEPIS 7.0 beta specific, or its something weird about my system. Anyone else care to try it out and let us know?

My 14 year-old print server

My 14 year-old print server finally blew-out its hard drive spindle bearings, last night, so I'll be messing-around with an install of 6.9.85beta4_32 on a laptop to tide things over. I'll pay attention to getting and installing OO.o_2.3 this time-around, to see what happens with the things you've mentioned.

How's my posting?

Oops! Still, I suppose 14 years is not bad Smiling

Thanks for looking into this.

In the meantime, does anyone know how I can downgrade to version 2.2? Preferably without MEPIS telling me there's something needs upgrading all the time. I would have thought there'd be a download from the OOo site, but I can't find one (maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place).

How's my posting... he asked.

You seem eager to install the most advanced OO.org version. 3.2: that's quite futuristic even....Smiling

I've completely uninstalled

I've completely uninstalled OOo and KOffice, removed all user settings, and reinstalled everything from the repositories. Good news is, Calc is now working fine with .xls files. Bad news is, documents created in KWord still aren't loading into OOo Writer properly. If anyone would like to have a look at http://files.boxstr.com/8591/Examples/TestKWord.odt in OOo and tell me if what they see is the same as what the text says it ought to be, that would be good.

Nope

In OO 2.2 on MEPIS 6.5.02, came up Times New Roman (20 and 10) for first two, third was as you described.

Thanks! OK, so it's

Thanks! OK, so it's obviously not a OOo 2.3 problem! Someone on the OOo forums gets the same result in OOo 2.0. Maybe I'm just an idiot and didn't notice the problem before because most of my documents were in Times New Roman anyway.

There's definitely a problem somewhere though, either with OOo or KWord. Files created in KWord lose their styles in OOo, whereas files created in OOo keep their styles if loaded into KWord. One of the two is obviously not treating Open Document files properly, I wonder which it is?

I took a closer look at..

I took a closer look at this new OO and it don't seem to format properly, one page documents are not fitting on one page and I don't know how to fix this, I tried changing the margins and all I got was a mess. The same documents load fine on Mepis 6.5.

As a little test, I removed

As a little test, I removed the Mepis Open Office files and installed the Debian Etch files and Open Office is now formating correct for me.
