I never really tried the wpn111 usb-wireless adapter (except in XP, where it works OK), because my laptop has Intel 3945ABG also - and that works out of the box with Mepis.
You could try ndiswrapper to use your windows driver
What I have read about the USB adapter is that on the Netgear cd, there should be a directory with Windows XP drivers inside it. The files that you will need are something like;
netwpn11.inf + wpn111.sys + ar5523.bin
If you find these, copy them from the cd to your home directory.
I'm really not sure if the following syntax is OK as I have never had to use ndiswrapper:
[Goto the home/user directory where the files were copied].
ndiswrapper -l netwpn111.inf
If it doesn't work: ask someone else howto. Maybe it is not possible at all.
