installing Lyx

Posts: 4

Hello from a new user, quite capable with computers, but inexperienced in Linux.

I need to install LyX 1.5.1, which is my text processing workhorse. The built in repositories provide an old version (1.4.3) which cannot process newer files. I found a 1.5.1 .deb package, but it requires a libc6 >2.4 and latex-xft-fonts, which I could not find. If I can't install LyX I'll have to go with a different distribution.

What's my best course of action?
Thanks!

Not sure where your problem

The dapper i386 version on this page:

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.5.1/

installed without problem on 6.5 here. But it won't run b/c of this error:

Quote:
lyx: error while loading shared libraries: libAiksaurus-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Didn't chase that down, but since it is different from yours I am wondering what your details are.

Mine wouldn't install

Mine wouldn't install because of the dependencies (libc6; latex-xft-fonts). How do I get those?

This is what I get

Quote:
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libaiksaurus-1.2-0c2a:
libaiksaurus-1.2-0c2a depends on libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6); however:
Version of libc6 on system is 2.3.6-0ubuntu20.5.
libaiksaurus-1.2-0c2a depends on libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1-12); however:
Version of libgcc1 on system is 1:4.0.3-1ubuntu5.
libaiksaurus-1.2-0c2a depends on libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.1-12); however:
Version of libstdc++6 on system is 4.0.3-1ubuntu5.
libaiksaurus-1.2-0c2a depends on libaiksaurus-1.2-data; however:
Package libaiksaurus-1.2-data is not installed.

I am not an expert here, but I go through them one at a time, using Google or Debian search (looking for a Dapper package for MEPIS 6.5). Other people on this forum know much more about this stuff than I...

mepisq, what version of

mepisq,

what version of MEPIS are you running?

I'm running the latest

I'm running the latest beta5.

I tried to get the packages from sid, but the upgraded libc6 threatened to break the system, so I stopped.

Have You INSTALLED Mepis?

Mepisq, have you INSTALLED the beta 5 of Mepis 7, or are you running from the Live CD. Because you're not going to be able to install additional software until after Mepis 7 has been installed on the hard drive.

Jon

The ability to comfortably use a computer is directly proportional to desire to listen, learn, and experiment, and is inversely proportional to the fear, anger, and stubbornness that you show.

Not only have I installed

Not only have I installed Mepis 7 beta 5, but indeed I have INSTALLED it. What prevented a successful LyX installation was, in fact, a package dependency problem. Do you Jon, have any suggestion?

Each one of these package

Each one of these package failures is due to the presence of an ubuntu package--which is an issue I've wrestled with before.

You can try to edit the dependency list, in the installation candidate, to get around some of those; however, I'm thinking that we're going to have to wait until all the ubuntu references have been purged from the distro before things like this go away for good.
