LiveCD into USB Stick - is it possible

Posts: 10

Is there anyway that we can "install" the Mepis 7 iso directly from harddisk (without going through a CD) into a 2GB USB memory stick?

This memory stick can then act as a LiveCD that can be brought along to anywhere to boot up Mepis Smiling

A pointer to a howto or a step by step guide will be very much appreciated.

Edit: We're not allowed to install Linux in this computer, so the ideal case will be the guide be catered to a window environment/tools .. ooops.

did you check...

... K Menu -> System -> MEPIS -> MEPIS System Assistant?

there is a tab labeled MEPIS USB Key. It's pretty self explanatory from there on how to create one. The only thing that got me when I first made one was I had to get a removal tool to get rid of the USB "tool" that autostarted whenever I plugged the Key into a Windows machine. Formatting did not get rid of it (Linux or Windows), you have to get the removal tool.

that should do it.

From Mepis - Not from windows

Thanks johnboy68, will give it a try when I am back with my home computer.

However, it would be good if there is a way to directly do it in windows. Since 2Gb usb sticks is getting more common, believe that this may be a new and interesting way of getting new users to try out Mepis.

Cheers

It will work from the live

It will work from the live CD as well. That's not the Windows answer you are looking for but at least you don't have to install MEPIS to make a bootable USB stick.
