Mepis login trouble.

I've been using mepis for roughly a month now and have had this problem before. Being a windows user, I fixed the problem with a swift reformat Eye-wink. However I wish to solve this problem than run from it.

I start up my computer, chose Mepis (I'm on a windows XP, SimplyMepis 6.5.02 dual boot. I'm not sure on the version number)

It's started up and I'm at the login screen. I type in my username and password press enter and the screen goes blank like its loading the desktop. about 5 seconds later the login screen pops right back up. I don't think it has to do with the drivers since I install them and had been using them for a while.

login trouble

Well from your description it could be a lot of things but lets try this to eliminate xwindow system.

Boot rig & at login splash hit ctrl alt f1 and log in as root at command line. Then do startx & enter to see what messages you get. Be sure to take note of them & post back with results.

I did as you suggested and

I did as you suggested and as expected I got an error...

X:Warning;process set two priority - 11 instead of requested priority -10

Fatal server error:

Server is already active for display 0.

If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.x0-lock.
and start again.

something along those lines. anyways I'm guessing i need to delete .x0-lock in the tmp dir. I'll wait for the response before I do anything.

Well it looks like X is running, & it's ok. Normally if x is not running you would get a no screens found error. Have you tried to log in as root as well as user with the same results?

And it would be nice to know if you are running beryl too? Thought it might be a snafu in xwindows & still may be. If memory serves you can turn beryl off at the log in screen, might try that.

Yeah, I just tried to log in

Yeah, I just tried to log in as root and it did the same thing.
I dont think i have beryl enabled. No special desktop animations or anything. :T
Is there a way I can figure out for sure?

If you cant log in as root something is amiss. Try reinstalling the xwindows system with the live cd first In Mepis utilities. If that dont work im afraid a reinstall saving home is next on my list. Quickest way i can think of to get you back up. Good luck!
